I am an aquatic biogeochemist at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in New York State. I research how rivers, lakes, and reservoirs shape the planet’s carbon and nutrient cycles, and how human activity is changing them. My work combines large-scale computational modeling and machine learning with adventure-driven fieldwork in some of the world's most remote watersheds. As an alpinist who has climbed in the Himalayas and mountain ranges across three continents, and a canoeist who has paddled remote rivers across Canada, I bring rare firsthand access to the watersheds I study, from Himalayan glacier-fed streams to the rivers of the American West.

My research on nitrous oxide emissions from inland waters contributed to the first global nitrous oxide budget, work that has since informed assessments by the IPCC, UNEP, and the FAO. I am also affiliated with the University of Leeds School of Geography and water@leeds.

Outside the lab, I am a writer. With bylines in the CBC, Trails, Indian Mountaineer, and Explore, I write about wild places, science, and the experience of moving through landscapes that most people never reach. I am working on my first novel.

I hold a PhD from the University of Waterloo.
